A Cashmere History

Discover the history of the world's finest fibre

From the high plateaus of Inner Asia to the modern luxury wardrobe, the story of cashmere is one of enduring desire.

Origins - 15th Century

Kashmir Valley

On the high plateaus of Inner Asia, nomadic herders comb the winter undercoat of the
Changthangi goat, barely 200 grams per animal per year. In the Kashmir Valley, artisans transform this rare fibre into the kani shawl: a court treasure of such complexity it could take months to weave. The Mughal emperors made it a currency of power.

Europe - 1799

JOSÉPHINE CHANGES EVERYTHING

Napoleon's troops return from Egypt bearing Kashmir shawls. One reaches Joséphine de Beauharnais and she is lost to it. She amasses over four hundred. Draped over the barely-there muslin gowns of Directoire Paris, the shawl becomes the era's defining luxury object: the 19th century's Birkin bag.

Scotland - 1800

SCOTLAND TAKES THE LEAD

The Scottish Borders, with centuries of fine wool tradition and naturally soft water, become cashmere's new home. Mills pioneer the knitted cashmere pullover, lighter, more modern, and more wearable than any shawl. Cashmere shifts from ceremonial object to daily companion.

France - 1920

CHANEL'S PHILOSOPHY

Coco Chanel champions soft knitwear, building a new vision of feminine dressing: comfort over constraint, ease over effort. She gives cashmere its modern context, luxury that moves with a woman rather than against her. The postwar twin set, worn with pearls by Grace Kelly and Princess Margaret, makes it a wardrobe essential.

America - 1990

CAROLYN BESSETTE-KENNEDY

Before quiet luxury had a name, it had a face. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy wore cashmere with cool, unhurried modernity, a slim crew-neck, restrained palette, nothing to prove. She brought the fibre to a younger generation and made it feel urgent. Her influence is having a powerful second moment as the 90s minimalist aesthetic surges back.

QUIET LUXURY ASCENDANT

No logos. No noise. Only exceptional cloth and perfect cut. The quiet luxury movement places cashmere at the centre of fashion's conversation, a return to the conviction that the best things need no explanation. Luxury fashion houses offer it not as trend, but as belief.
