RETAILER WE LOVE || The Luxe Edit Online

Meet Paula Murphy & Nicola Laird of The Luxe edit

Founded by friends Paula Murphy and Nicola Laird as an answer to endless questions from friends and clients as to the origin of their accessories and clothing, The Luxe Edit is today, their collection of international brands and treasures, curated for the modern women who believe in timeless style. Despite being separated by hemispheres, reisiding in Auckland and London respectively, Paula and Nicole shape The Luxe Edit as a seasonal ode to luxurious destinations and inspired aesthetics. We spoke with both about how their differing styles bring balance, and why they love Laing.

Tell us about your beautiful store - how did you start and what's been exciting about the journey thus far?

Nic and I have been best friends for over 20 years, and despite living on opposite sides of the world for more than half of that time, we’d always dreamed of being able to work together one day.  We both love travelling, and discovering new labels and unique treasures from markets and out of the way destinations, and were constantly being asked by friends and personal styling clients alike, where they too could acquire these unique pieces.  So we came up with the concept of The Luxe Edit – A seasonal Edit of Women’s clothing and accessories, inspired by our favourite luxury destinations. https://theluxeeditonline.com/

What would you say your aesthetic of your store is - who are the ladies your dressing?

After its initial launch in November 2018, the Luxe Edit has swiftly built up a dedicated clientele of women looking for unique luxury pieces with a rock ’n’ roll edge. The one-off designer vintage, which arrives in-store every couple of weeks is quickly snapped up by customers looking for limited-edition pieces.  Our Luxe ladies are well-travelled, with an appreciation of quality fabrics and considered styling and fits.  They are looking for beautiful unique pieces to refresh their wardrobes with, and shop with a quality over quantity mindset.

How would you describe your own personal style? What is the key to a successful outfit?

Paula:  I’m one of those people that dress for the sort of mood I’m in that day, and pick colours and outfits accordingly.  Generally speaking I like clean simple lines, but clashing prints,  nothing too ‘put-together’ or perfectly matched.   I tend to gravitate towards the more masculine,  borrowed from the boys kind of pieces, but then I love a ruffle or a frilly hem too, so I guess I’m a bit eclectic.

Nic: I would describe my style as classic with a masculine edge - it’s a pretty defined look - a uniform, if you will. I love tailoring and feel my best in skinny jeans with a beautifully cut blazer. I’m a big believer in investment items and re-wear my pieces often. Some items I turn to again and again and a change of lipstick or different shoes breathe new life into them and make them feel fresh again. The key to a successful outfit for me is comfort and being true to your own personal style.

Which piece are you coveting from Laing's new Spring/Summer collection?

P:  The Jasper Cashmere T in Orchid paired with the Chaplin Pant in Mojave Tan is my favourite colour combo this season, and I’m wearing my Virginia Tanks with, and under everything.

N: I’m coveting the Chaplin Pant in Ebony and the Popover Shirt in White as these are classic trans-seasonal pieces which I could incorporate into my London life/wardrobe perfectly.

How will you be wearing/styling this piece as we head into spring? What will you be wearing it with?

P: The Virginia Tanks are a Spring wardrobe staple for me - the fit and fabrication are both flattering, and super luxe to wear.  Currently I’m wearing them layered under open shirts and Blazers, but as the weather warms I’ll be wearing mine tucked into my new Cacao Leather Shorts.

N: What I love about the Chaplin Pant is its versatility - I will be styling them with fishnet socks and Birkenstocks for running around the City during the day and then dressing them up with my Vetements Ankle Boots and HS Leather Blazer in the evening. The Popover Shirt I’m looking forward to wearing over my bikini on my next European adventure!

What do you admire most about Laing as a brand?

Laing’s pieces are both modern, and somewhat timeless.  They are simple well cut styles, made from quality fabrics and yarns, that are a versatile addition to any new season wardrobe update.
