Annabel Hurman is a mother and biologist who grew tired of using a worn out toothbrush that she always forgot to replace, and found environmentally and aesthetically depressing. So like all great entrepreneurs, she set out to develop her own brand to meet her needs in the knowledge that she would not be the only one looking for a new way to approach oral hygiene. Ultimately, Toothcrush was founded, an online subscriber business delivering environmentally friendly toothbrushes directly to your door. Annabel gives us some insights into her sleep style and rituals for self-care.

I run a business called Toothcrush, which is a bamboo toothbrush subscription service

Morning person or night owl?

I’m definitely a morning person. Not a get-up-at-5am-and-do-exercise person, but come 7 am I am a woman on a mission to get everyone up and ready for the day. As long as the espresso pot is locked and loaded, I’m good to go.

What do you remember about your bedtime ritual as a child?

My mother always read to me every night in bed and then we would sing songs together!

What’s your bedtime ritual right now?

I religiously have a bath each night and take a book with me. Hence there are a lot of water damaged books in our bookcase. I try to limit screen time close to bed – which is difficult when you run an online business. I have 20 minutes reading on my Shakti mat and then it’s lights out.

What was the last dream you can recall?

Last night I had a dream that I was accompanying my friend to Russia (where she is having chemotherapy and stem-cell transplantation for MS) and I lost her in the Russian airport and got side-tracked by some Russian ambulance officers. Clearly, I’m experiencing some anxiety on her behalf…

Describe your bedroom style in three words?

Warm, cosy, simple

Duvets or blankets?

What is always on your bedside table?

My lamp and a book

If you could be a character from a book, who would you be?

That’s a really hard question! In most of the books I read, the characters don’t really have enviable lives and I quite like my own. At a push, I’d say Claire Frazer from the Outlander series. Her medical knowledge and how she manages to apply them in a pre-pharmaceutical time is admirable. Plus, well, Jamie…

Journal or electronic diary?

I’m a recent convert to an electronic diary. I resisted for a long time, but now I have the ability to invite my husband on date nights, which he always swiftly accepts

Favourite poem/poet?

I don’t really have a favourite poem per se, but I’m a bit of a sucker for lyrics written by Maynard James Keenan

Favourite morning ritual?

I load my espresso pot in the evenings so all I need to do is flick it on and know that I am moments away from my one and only coffee for the day.

Favourite way to relax after work?

On the couch with James watching our latest favourite series

How do you treat yourself?

My favourite way of treating myself is not cooking the dinner.

What does luxury mean to you?

I’m a pretty simple person really so luxury to me is satisfying all the senses. Having a full tummy, being warm, feeling healthy, listening and/or watching something that interests me and being with people I love. Freshly cleaned sheets and beautiful pjs feel pretty luxurious to me, even if I’ve had to change the sheets myself…

Complete this sentence: I couldn’t function without…

James and my daily briefings with Allanah.

What hashtag would you give your mornings:

During the week? #trippwhereareyourshoes

On the weekend? #trippwhereareyourfootballboots

Where is your happy place?

There are so many happy places! I’m equally happy at the top of Big King walking my dog as I am snuggled on the couch watching a movie with the family. For me, it’s down to who I am with. Perfect scenario - Bali with a bunch of friends and our families.

What do you wear to travel in?

To be honest I haven’t found my perfect travelling outfit yet. I generally go for comfy trackies and layers because it’s always either freezing or boiling on the aeroplane. I’d like something that is a little bit more presentable than my current options, if that’s a line you’re thinking of expanding into, then I’ll be your first customer…

Next destination?

Sydney, a couple of girlfriends and I are heading away for a long weekend of chilling out, shopping and eating.
